38 Q & A's

(Phil Silvers as Sgt Ernie Bilko)
Maintenant avec la traduction française

Marie-Laure

First of all, I would like to know if your nieces's cats are still
alive...LOL
For anyone who doesn't know, I've been 'cat-sitting' while my brother and the girls are away on holiday.
Yes, the cats, rabbits, tortoises, gerbils etc...are still alive. Must be wondering who that strange man is in their house...

Now seriously :

1: What are your best and worse memories in your life ? and with the Rubettes ?

I have so many happy memories Marie-Laure. One that springs to mind was my first live performance at the Royal Albert Hall with the Monkees. That was the first major gig our Dad came to see us play. I can clearly remember standing backstage knowing he was going to be thrilled by it...and he was. After that he insisted on coming to every show on the tour. He drove my Mum thousands of miles to see us.

Mum and Dad also came to see my debut performance with the Kinks. I'm so glad he experienced that as he became ill shortly afterwards.

The worst memories are my Dad, then my Mum, passing away.

The best and worst memory with the Rubettes ?

As you can imagine, there are literally thousands of great memories over the last 10 years. I enjoy all the gigs, large or small.

I really enjoyed the recording studio sessions for the 'On Tour' CD. All 3 guys are seriously good session men and great singers.

Some of the big shows are really memorable. If you get the chance to experience the 'Golden Years' concert in Antwerp you won't be disappointed - even though we only play a brief set.

Koln (Cologne) Arena was also fantastic. You never get used to seeing yourself on a giant screen !

The gig in Berlin next week at the 02 will probably be a similar event. One of my friends has a great philosophy. "Memories are better than dreams."

Worst memory..? I remember a gig in France several years back. Everything was set up perfectly, a big crowd. We started playing 'Foe Dee O Dee' and...no piano ??

No matter what I did, I couldn't get it going. If you tap your fingers on your computer keyboard right now - that's what the piano solo sounded like ! I was really cross. As usual Alan & Mick came over. They thought it was hilarious ! It transpired that somebody stood on the electric plug so there was no power going to the keyboard. A stage technician repaired it at the end of the song and we were up and running again...

2: Which countries would you like to visit ?

I've been to a lot of places now. I haven't visited South America, Japan would be very interesting. New Zealand. I would like to visit those countries one day...we'll see

Quel pays aimerais-tu visiter ?

Sylvie

3: Did you ever have an idol?

Hmm... I can't say I ever had an idol as such. There are many musicians I admire greatly...

...hang on, I have thought of somebody. When I was 8 my Dad took me down to East Ham to visit my Grand-mother and also see my football team, West Ham play. I met the great Bobby Moore in his sports shop. He was a fantastic player and captain of England when we won the World Cup for the first and only time. Now, he was my idol.

N’as-tu jamais eu d’idole?

4: What do you prefer: Mountains or Oceans???

Oceans. I was born in Portsmouth (which is the main UK Navy base) and love the sea.

Interesting story. My Great Grand-Father was the Captain of Kaiser Wilhelm's liner and won the riband for the fastest Trans-Atlantic crossing

5: In which year did you become a Rubette and how did it go?

My first gig was in January 2000 in Germany. John re-joined at the same time. The gig went very well and I was impressed by the genuine affection the fans had for the band. I'm still impressed by that today.

6: Are there times that you and the other boys go out or do something nice
together, when there is no gig?

Well, there have been some rare occasions. That's really because I live some distance from the other guys. I do recall going to see the 'Eagles' with Alan and Christine.

Mick and I will be playing golf together this week. We went to see Alison Krauss and her band Union Station at the Hammersmith Apollo.

I occasionally stay at John's house and hope to get him and Cherrile on my Wii Fitness board ;-)

More frequent are the occasions when we are away on trips abroad or on tour. This weekend I had a meal with Alan, Mick and Dan from Showaddywaddy at our hotel in Denmark. We had travelled over the night before and enjoyed a very relaxing evening.

7: What appeals to your sense of humour?

Lots of things. Phil Silvers was a genius. Monty Python appealed to me when I was young. As did the 'Goon' radio show. Recently I enjoy watching Frazier, Due South, Futurama, the Simpsons (Mick loves the Simpsons). Check out the film 'Galaxy Quest'. Very funny.

Mel Brooks 'the Producers', 'High Anxiety', 'Young Frankenstein' and of course 'Blazing Saddles'.

Anything with Leslie Nielsen "Don't call me Shirley".

My Mum liked watching 'Crocodile Dundee' with me, and my Dad loved Phil Silvers 'Bilko' (pictured above), a classic tv comedy series set in an Army barracks. He took me to see Phil Silvers in Bournemouth way back in the 70's and managed to get us backstage to meet the great man. Unforgettable !

Mel Brooks 'the Producers', 'High Anxiety', 'Young Frankenstein' et bien évidemment 'Blazing Saddles'.

Inoubliable !

8: Do you like Australian wine? - where I live in the Swan Valley is where all the wineries are.

Yes I do like Aussie wine Margi. Jacobs Creek wine is popular over here amongst others.

9: Why do Rubettes always play the same songs on concerts? There a so many wonderful songs, so why always the same?

I remember Alan answering this question in the Fan Club newsletter from the 1990's. We are restricted by the amount of time we have to perform. Then there are certain songs we are expected to perform. (I'm referring to the 'hit's of course). For the majority of the audience it is the first time they've seen the band, however I appreciate that other people who come regularly would like to hear some different tunes.

So... I occasionally slip some unusual songs into sound checks. Last week we did 'Dancing In The Rain'. I was inspired by the torrential rain that had been falling for several hours. I've also played 'The Way You Live' and plan to do 'You're The Only Girl On My Island' next time we get a soundcheck (probably in Belgium).

In recent years we've added the Doo Wop medley, the Taiko Drums and 'Let's Dance' into the act which are all very popular. If we ever get this 'evening with' tour of Belgium organised (maybe next year now) we'll be playing a bunch of songs including 'Little Darling', 'Allez Oop' and... the thong favourite, 'Little 69'...

J’ai également interprété « The Way You Live » et j’envisage de jouer « You’re The Only Girl On My Island » la prochaine fois que nous aurons une balance (probablement en Belgique).

10:.What do you think will you do in 10 years?

I intend to still be performing Heidi...if my health lets me. Alan, John & Mick will all be in nursing homes so I'll be looking for some go-go dancers to replace them. Any volunteers..? Heidi ?? HEIDI ???

? Heidi ?? HEIDI ???

Nancy

11:. How old were you when you sang your first song on stage and how did it feel ?

I have a photo of my brother and myself at a talent contest in Bournemouth. I'm holding a trumpet.I don't remember what we played but I do remember 2 of the other kids. One was dressed up like Sinatra and sang 'My Way'. There was also a girl who sang 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep'. I remember Sinatra accused her of 'farting'... which she vociferously denied !!

The first professional gig I recall us doing was in Spalding with the ventriloquist Terry Hall and Lenny the Lion. It felt great. There were loads of kids in the town hall (Civic Centre).

Note de la traductrice.

12. What was the first song that you sang along with The Rubettes at your first gig?

'Foe Dee O Dee' was the very first one. I'll mention the second song as well because it was unusual...'Way Back In The Fifties'. I also remember we wore red 'polo' shirts and black trousers. the white suits weren't ready !

« Way Back In The Fifties ».

Lin

13: If you were not a musician what would you of done?

Checkout girl ;-) My parents were both teachers. Really inspirational people who had a huge positive impact on the people they taught. I'd like to have done that. In fact I did briefly in 1993. I covered for a local school whose music teacher was on maternity leave. The day I left, the whole school gave me a standing ovation (probably because I never gave anyone homework !)

14: Who would you most like to work with past or present, and why?

Buddy Holly...he managed to be commercially successful and innovative at the same time. He also kept his arrangements simple so that any band could play them.

I still regularly play 'That'll Be The Day, 'Rave On', 'Everyday', 'Heartbeat', 'Oh Boy', 'Peggy Sue,' It Doesn't Matter Anymore'... so many more to choose from - but remember, he only actually recorded for 3 years.

Je joue encore régulièrement « That’ll Be The Day », Rave On », « Everyday », « Heartbeat », « Oh Boy », « Peggy Sue », « It Deesn’t Matter Anymore »… tellement d’autres à choisir – cependant je me souviens qu’il n’a en fait enregistré que pendant 3 ans.

Laurence

15: As a musician and singer what are your musical wishes for the future ?".

To keep going as long as possible Laurence. To perform down in Nimes. Somehow, I'm going to get the Rubettes back in the charts.

For those who are on facebook and on My space, you know I am fond of
flowers and I often take some photos of flowers to share with you,
so for the second question I will ask Mark

16:What is your favourite flower ?

Gentians. I know that Sylvia has a gentian plant in her garden as a tribute to my Mum. That was very thoughtful.

Pascale

17:What do you like doing when you're not playing music(hobbies)?

Lately I've been driving the Rubes mad with tales of my Wii Fitness prowess. I probably spend too much time on the Internet and not enough time at the gym. I need to balance those 2 out a bit.. I also enjoy visiting my nieces. We played 'Badminton' recently. I enjoyed it but, boy, was I breathing heavy by the end of the session.

18 Do you have to rehearse with the guys from time to time in between gigs ?

Occasionally, usually harmonies. That sort of thing.

Lily

19. Did your life turn out the way you wanted it to be?

A lot of it has Lilly. I have a few regrets but things have turned out pretty much how I hoped. The only ambition I haven't fulfilled yet was solo chart success. I got so close with 'Why Can't They'... however, there's still time.

20. If you could trade lives with anyone for a day, who would it be?

In the present day... James Morrison is making some good records right now. I'd quite like to change places with a top footballer. They're the new popstars. Also Mick's son Andy is doing extremely well. His latest record made the UK Top 40.

Yumiko

21: When you continue music activity, what is the most important thing ?

I thought about this for years Yumiko and can thank my Uncle for helping me realise that I have a desire to entertain people. I want them to enjoy what I do and go home feeling they have had a good time.

22: Why do you think the Rubettes continues being loved by many people?

It helps that they had a lot of success and a memorable image. People remember the band. I am often told at gigs that people are surprised by the musical ability of the band. We can play a lot of different styles, every one of us can sing and there can't be many pop groups who perform a Taiko Drum routine !!

Per

23: Will there come a "Rubes 2" CD

I've actually recorded a bunch of tracks Per. It's very different to the first CD. At the moment I can't reveal why, but I can assure you it sounds amazing ! Different to anything you'll ever of heard before

I played a couple of mixes to the guys. Alan & John were knocked out. They both thought it was fantastic. Mick wasn't quite as enthusiastic. The reason you haven't heard it yet is because I'm actually trying to get a major release for it. The only clue I can give is there will need to be a lot of copyright clearance...

24. How many music instruments can you play?

Over the years I've learnt Piano, Tumpet, Guitar, Flute, Drums, Xylophone, Ukelele...the only thing I couldn't get to grips with was the Saxophone. I suspect that's because the trumpet is a very different technique

Eva

25: Have you already made up your mind about what you will be doing when the band will stop (the latest of course as we all hope)?

It's a similar answer I gave earlier Evelyne. I fully intend to continue performing...until I drop. Hopefully that will still include travelling to exotic locations. That's when the go-go dancers will take centre stage :-)

26 If you had the chance to come back on earth (after your death) would you love to be a human being again (girl or boy) or would you prefer to be an animal and what kind of animal?

It would be interesting to come back as an animal. I'm not sure I'd prefer it but...everybody here seems to like cats so... I'd come back as a cat, then you could all spoil me :-) If I come back as a human it would have to be as a boy...so you could all spoil me ;-)

Barbara

27: Do you have stage fright before you go onstage?

I can honestly say I have never professionally had stage fright Barbara. That's probably because the first gigs we did were in big theatres packed with kids. I'm sure that if we had started in smaller venues we probably would have become a lot more anxious as our careers developed. However, you might be surprised to learn that I do get a little nervous if I'm ever asked to sing karaoke !!

John and Mick have no fear of live gigs though Alan likes to know the equipment is working.

28: Do you, or the other boys, have any mascot?

We don't, though John apparently did like to sleep with a big, yellow teddy bear...

Kelly

29: What is the most beautiful proof of love a girl could give you?

Well Kelly, personally I've never needed any proof. Material or physical. It is something I just...sense.

I do appreciate that women like to give and receive presents. Personally I always found women like to receive flowers...

It does amuse me when I see you girls looking in the jewellery shop windows. All those sparkly things..;-)

30: If you had to change one thing in your life, what would it be? "

When I had my solo record deal with RCA in the 1980's I know I started chasing success. Instead of creating my own style I started trying to emulate what was in the charts. That's always a mistake as, by the time you get a record out, the style you have copied has already gone out of fashion. If I had the chance again I would stay true to myself, do what I believed in and wait for the trends to catch up with me.

Antonio

31:Which has always been your favorite song of the band?

'You're The Reason Why'. It was the band's first attempt at writing a hit single themselves. Very different to anything they had released before. I'm pleased that song did well in Holland, Belgium and Germany. It did OK in England.

« You’re The Reason Why ».

32: Which was the true reason that conquered you of the band. That it transformed you into fan?

I do enjoy Antonio's efforts at typing in English. You have a unique way of communicating with us all Antonio.

I was fortunate enough to see the Rubettes first appearance on 'Top Of The Pops' Antonio. Most of the band had made previous unsuccessful appearances and knew this was probably their last chance. They took the opportunity and delivered a memorable performance. It had that indefinable quality called 'Magic'. I wasn't the only person to think so as the record raced to the top of the UK charts.

33: If you've got possibility to change something in your past, what would it be ?

We had a similar question before but, like I said earlier, I have a few regrets. So... my family had to make a decision at one point in the 1980's. Whether to move back to Bournemouth ? If I had the chance again I'd encourage them to move and see how we got on...

Also I'd ask my first girlfriend Pippa to marry me ! We were both 5 years old. Mum took me round to her house one day as I was infatuated with her. It turned out she lived in the biggest, richest house in Gosport. Of course Mum then had to invite Pippa round to our house...which was a very nice house but...I'm sure Pippa and I would have been very happy together in the BIGGEST, RICHEST house in Gosport.

34: Who do you like to record a duet with ?

Kim Wilde. While there was a break in the recording session I'd take her round the back of the bicycle sheds for a 'snog' ;-)

Avec qui aimerais-tu faire un duo ?

Kim Wilde.

Marie

35: Do you enjoy sometimes solitude ?

Yes I do. I never feel lonely.

Aimes-tu la solitude parfois ?

Oui. Je ne me sens jamais seul.

36: Can you tell us more about "Café au lait" ?

Yes I can Marie. It's going to be a 6 track CD. I've made good progress on 3 songs so far but had to take a little break from it towards the end of July as we've just been too busy with the travelling. It's a CD you can listen to while drinking coffee...with several chocolate biscuits :))

37: I'd like to know when was it that Mark decided he would like to become a member of the Rubettes, after being a fan for a long time?

I decided immediately I would like to become a member of the Rubettes in 1974 Joan. It took 26 years...but I made it :-)

38: And how did he go about getting the job??

I bought the 'Making Love In The Rain' CD and noticed that some other songwriters had contributed songs. So... I sent a cassette tape of one of my songs to Alan. He liked the song but, more importantly, he liked the piano playing.

He rang me up and asked "who played the keyboards on your recording. We're looking for a new keyboard player".

When I finally convinced him it was me, he invited me down to audition. He did say over the phone "as long as you're not too tall, not good looking and have no hair...you'll be fine" !!

I Can Live With That

July has carried on from where June left off...

Lots of travelling over to Europe on scheduled planes ( & Alan's 6 seater), a good run of successful gigs and the usual 'ups and downs' with the weather we've grown used to.

On a personal note, I found the environment in Leksand, Sweden very healthy and inspirational (John is obviously enjoying it too). Our hotel was in a beautiful location and the air was exceptionally clean. It was lovely just sitting outside looking out over a lake and breathing everything in.

Last weekend we arrived at Hanover airport in Germany. Our hotel was literally right by the airport. The gig was an hour drive to the old East German border, a town called Hötensleben. At least it should have been an hour. Unfortunately our driver got a bit lost and the trip ended up taking over 2 hours !

It was all a bit of a rush to get ready to go onstage, not helped by a torrential downpour of rain. However, over 4000 people enjoyed the show. Pretty good for a band that has been going 35 years now. The boys were delighted with the response we received.

On Sunday we were back on Alan's plane heading towards Lille, France. From there we were driven straight over the Belgian border to a town called Peruwelz. It would have been nice to spend a bit of time at the hotel first, but I enjoyed the day. Lovely sunshine and a warm welcome from the local people.

It's difficult to describe how it feels to be applauded wherever you go. Alan, John & Mick must be used to it by now. For me it's a relatively new experience. A very nice experience though.

By the time I got home on Monday I felt a bit jet-lagged and went straight to bed. I guess that's really the only downside to all this. Every now and again you find yourself waking up at 9 o'clock... in the evening.

I can live with that.

Stay tuned,

Mark

Easily done...

Well...that was an eventful weekend.

I was just about to 'hit the sack' on Thursday evening when the Michael Jackson story broke. Instead of getting off to bed, ready for an early start for France in the morning, I was glued to the Internet like everyone else, devouring all the updates and rumours as they flooded in.

Eventually the story was confirmed and Michael Jackson joined the list of superstars who shone like comets... only to crash and burn out far too soon.

It took me back to 1990. I'd been with the Kinks for about a year and was reaching the end of a US tour.

My Dad had warned me before joining the band that there were going to be "a lot of temptations laid before me now" and I had to be strong enough to resist them.

Of course I ignored him and quickly embraced the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. My 'achilles heel' turned out to be alcohol. Understandable really. There was a bar awaiting us in the dressing room every night... and nobody asking us to pay. At least I avoided getting involved with drugs.

Well, sort of...
En fait, en quelque sorte…

I hit on the idea that if I took some aspirin at the end of each drinking session I wouldn't have a hangover in the morning. I was right.
J’avais raison.

Great ! For the next 6 weeks I happily carried on drinking like a fish, popping headache pills not realising I was slowly burning a hole in the lining of my stomach.
Super !

I guess I was lucky I made it back to England when I did because I'm not convinced my medical insurance would have covered 'being an idiot'.

By the time I made it through Heathrow airport security I was in a wheel chair. Dad (remember him ?) hauled me back home and into hospital where my life was saved with a blood transfusion.

6 bags worth !
La valeur de 6 poches de sang !

That sobered me up real quick and I've taken it very steady ever since. If you learn nothing else from me, don't mix alcohol with painkillers.

Which brings me back to Michael Jackson. All kinds of allegations are flying around at the moment. At some point in the future we'll know precisely what happened but he may have taken on too much with the 50 date run of gigs in London.

Several shows were already postponed and the info we had (from a very good source) was that Michael was going to sing 4 songs in a 12 song set. The other 8 were going to be lip synched while star guests filled out the show.

None of that seems very important now. Chances are he finally pushed himself just that little bit too far.

It's easily done...
Il est facile de le faire.

Meanwhile, I managed to haul myself out of bed Friday morning and made it over to France, with the boys, in the 'bette-mobile', via Eurostar, through torrential rain.

The sky cleared, the gig went great and, once again, we all made it home safe and sound.

Hallelujah !
Hallelujah !

Coming up this weekend is a gig over in Great Yarmouth on the east coast of England. The next day we have an early start for Sweden. I haven't been there in a while, but it looks like Europe is in for a bit of a heatwave so, I expect it to be very enjoyable.

Stay tuned,
Restez branché(e)s,

Mark
